Google introduces strategic initiatives at Malaysia’s National AI Office launch
At the inauguration of Malaysia's National AI Office (NAIO), Google unveiled two strategic collaborations with government agencies to enhance public service delivery through generative AI.
The first initiative, "AI at Work," is a partnership between the Ministry of Digital and Google Cloud. This pilot program integrates Google's Gemini AI into the daily workflows of public officers, utilizing tools like NotebookLM—a personalized AI research assistant—to provide insights from trusted sources, thereby facilitating quicker decision-making and improved responsiveness to citizen needs.
The second initiative involves the establishment of an "AI Policy and Skilling Lab" in Malaysia, a collaboration between NAIO and Google. This lab aims to provide policymakers with frameworks and best practices to harness AI's transformative potential responsibly. It will serve as a platform for industry experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to exchange ideas, address emerging issues, and develop informed policy recommendations, promoting the secure and responsible application of AI in Malaysia.
These initiatives build upon Google's earlier commitment to support Malaysia's digital journey, including a US$2 billion investment in a new data center and Google Cloud region in the country. The NAIO serves as the central authority driving Malaysia's AI agenda, spearheading initiatives that leverage AI to strengthen the digital economy, improve public services, and contribute to sustainable development goals. It also facilitates Malaysia’s participation in regional AI developments, particularly in Southeast Asia, by creating AI-driven solutions that address local and regional challenges.
In addition to Google's efforts, Microsoft announced the launch of "AI for Malaysia’s Future," an initiative aimed at equipping 800,000 Malaysians with AI skills by the end of 2025. This program supports the Malaysian government's broader efforts to upskill and reskill the workforce, ensuring a robust talent pipeline for AI-related jobs.
